One of the very few likable things about new people, as it turns out.

What do you dislike about them as a group?

The predisposition to think that just because they're the heroes of their own stories, fate will simply slot them into the role that leads to freedom and victory without their exerting any particular effort.

Also: cheerfulness. I hate unnecessary cheerfulness.

Isn't it better if they're cheerful than if they're depressed?

Sometimes depression is just more realistic. This isn't a cruise ship, it pays to be prepared.

Doesn't mean people can't get married or have a nice time, whatever, just so long as they never wholly let their guard down.

There are alternatives to letting the reality of this situation turn depressing.

Flying a ship full of people with unrealistic expectations is depressing.

Well I still have the company of people like you. Now if the entire crew were made out of argumentative teenagers it'd be a different matter.
